Something’s Got A Hold On Me

At Planet Fitness, we’ve always believed that training is about more than just reps. It’s about dynamic movement, connection, positivity and the sheer pleasure of doing something that’s good for you on every level.

This is why our recent collab with Freshlyground’s new lead singer, Mbali Makhoba, feels so good. Together, we created something that’s bigger than a campaign. We remade a classic track, Etta James’ 1962 song ‘Something’s got a hold on me’, turning it into a piece of content that looks like a music video with a South African twist, but feels like a brand ad that’s more than just a brand ad. It’s a celebration of energy. An affirmation of community. A fist-bump to all South Africans who can’t help but feel that 2026 is going to deliver good things in abundance.

The choice of this song makes perfect sense. Etta’s original track is soulful, powerful, and impossible not to move to. Its timeless energy captures the joy and momentum that comes from being fully alive… exactly the emotions we wanted to bring to our collab.

And, Flo Rida’s 2011 smash hit ‘Good feeling’ sampled Etta’s iconic song, pairing it with a music video that’s about motion and the thrill of life being well lived. There’s running, boxing, dancing, paddleboarding and the adrenaline and inclusiveness of a live concert. It’s a celebration of activity that aligns perfectly with the feeling of training at Planet Fitness.

From my perspective in marketing, this is what excites me the most: creating content that doesn’t stop at promoting our brand, but that goes on to create a larger feeling. A feeling that people can connect with, that makes them want to move, grow as people, and be part of something bigger. A feeling that South Africans can fall in love with. A moment of optimism and joy. (And, of course, an earworm that’ll keep you going through the toughest commute, workday or training session.)

The song, the beats, the talent… it’s all very South African. It’s young, fresh, and upbeat. And, it’s a reminder that Planet Fitness isn’t just a bunch of clubs where people go to train. We’re a community that celebrates what it feels like to be strong, healthy, and happy together.

Here’s to a year full of positivity and good feelings, on the mat, on the track and in every part of our lives.
