There’s a myth going around that health and fitness clubs are a high-risk environment for COVID-19 infections. Yet, there is some legendary data coming out of South Africa, America, Australia and the UK, that is quickly starting to bust those myths!
The team at Planet Fitness LOVES science and research – so let’s lay out some fast facts for you:
#1. Health clubs are NOT unique hotspots for coronavirus, and transmission rates are LOW.
This is a positive trend from data gathered for the global fitness industry by IHRSA. They are one of the world’s leading international authorities on the commercial health club industry.
#2. 42% of South Africans are more likely to test positive for Covid-19 at large gatherings, while transmissions from gyms are 0,00001%.
South Africa is seeing the same trend as the UK, Australia and the United States, which shows that with high levels of sanitation; constant communication; new behaviors; protocols; and risk mitigation in place, health and fitness clubs are safe and low risk for contracting COVID-19. This data is from a recent study by SA Disaster Management authorities in the Eastern Cape.
#3. SA trends on track with the global data
In America, a total of 49.4 million-member check-ins were captured and the IHRSA study, found that there was a 0.0023% infection rate and none of the cases led to community transmission. At Planet Fitness SA alone, we tracked 2.7-million check-ins through the entry turnstiles of our 47 clubs across the country, and we are proud to see that they correspond well with the research that’s been done around the world.
In the same study, the United Kingdom collected data from over 8 million member check-ins and while 17 cases of COVID-19 were reported, contraction did not happen at any of the 1300 fitness facilities in the study. And in Australia, researchers gathered over 6.26 million check-ins from 423 gyms and fitness facilities, and while data shows 13 cases of COVID-19, there have been zero reported community transmission cases.
#4. SA staying ahead of the curve
The various levels of lockdown compliance have meant that local gyms have had to reduce the number of members working out at any one time since September last year. Planet Fitness has packed a punch and we’ve been consistent in staying ahead of worldwide health and safety compliance so that we can help our community to fight this ever-changing virus through fitness at gym – or at home. #5. Gym is part of the solution! Build your immunity while you wait for a vaccine.
We have been consistent with our message since the very start of the pandemic – and in the absence of a current vaccine, exercise is vital to build immune systems – it is part of the solution to taking control of your health and beating Covid-19.
There you have it. And while we can’t completely eliminate the risk of COVID-19 in fitness centres—or anywhere in society – it’s great to know of the emerging evidence that suggests
health clubs are not primary drivers of transmission, and that the exercise and social support they provide are vital to your health and wellbeing!
